Apples - Red Delicious (Not Available)
Red Delicious apples are sweet, with a floury and fine-grained texture. Best of all, they have a delectably refreshing taste! Enjoy them fresh, or mixed in with a fruit salad.
How do we make sure we provide top quality Red Delicious apples?
The Red Delicious should have a solid, rich and red colour. It sometimes has a light yellow streak or yellowish blush.
We make sure that the Red Delicious apples we choose for your box are firm with a smooth, clear skin. We avoid Red Delicious apples with soft or dark spots. We test the integrity of the Red Delicious by holding the apple in the palm of our hand and feeling that the apple is solid and heavy (avoiding apples that are soft and light). We avoid Red Delicious apples that wrinkle when a thumb is gently run across the skin (this is an indicator that it has been in storage for too long, or has not properly stored). We also check for “russeting” – a rough, browning condition usually found at the stem end of the apple.
Where do we source our Red Delicious apples?
Red Delicious apples are grown in all six Australian states. We try to source locally grown apples (from around the Bacchus Marsh region), and if local supply is low, we source from other Victorian locations such as the Goulburn Valley, Harcourt, Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland.
What is the best way to keep Red Delicious apples?
Apples are best stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator and kept away from strong odour food to prevent flavour absorption.
