Believed to be a hybrid of a pomelo and an orange, this juicy citrus is best enjoyed as a breakfast fruit, juiced, or eaten in a cheesecake!

How do we make sure we provide top quality grapefruit?

Density is the best indicator for freshness when it comes to grapefruit: the heavier it is, the juicier it is. Colour is not a suitable indicator, as this can vary from a pale yellow to a bronze, neither are small blemishes on the skin, as they don’t affect flavour. We also check the surface for signs of ageing (such as soft spots) and for any signs of handling injury.

Where do we source our grapefruit from?

Grapefruit grows best in a tropical to sub-tropical climate. We source most of our grapefruit from around Mildura and the Murray Valley. If Victorian supply is short, we source grapefruit from either New South Wales (the Griffith or Murrumbidgee regions), or from Queensland (from around the Bundaberg, Gatton and Mundubbera regions).

What is the best way to keep grapefruit?

Grapefruit store best in the warmer part of the fridge (optimal storage conditions are 15°C and 85%-95% relative humidity).

Grapefruit nutritional information

Grapefruit are a great source of vitamin B5 and vitamin C. They are also a good source of dietary fibre, potassium and low in kilojoules. Grapefruit had been shown to normalize red blood cell levels, with the ability to both lower and increase red blood cell count according to the body’s requirements (1/2 – 1 grapefruit a day). It is also a blood tonic, helping to remove old red blood cells from the body. Darker varieties also contain excellent levels of carotenes, which protect against heart disease and cancer. Grapefruit also contain enzymes that help detoxify the body by making toxic compounds more water-soluble (for easier elimination from the body).  The pulp contains glucartes that eliminate excess estrogen from the body, which is useful for the prevention of breast cancer.

Grapefruit serving tips and suggestions

Eat them whole (can sprinkle some honey or maple syrup to sweeten them, or add cinnamon and nutmeg), juice them (instead of a glass of OJ in the morning) or convert them into a smoothie. Grapefruit can also be a tangy addition to a salad or salsa. As a dessert, you can try grapefruit in a cheesecake or marmalade.
