Lebanese cucumbers are the smallest and the sweetest – they are a popular choice for salads, juices and sandwiches!

How do we make sure we provide top quality lebanese cucumber?

Simple - we grow it ourselves! Sam draws on three generations of horticultural experience to grow fresh, tasty and full-flavoured lebanese cucumbers. When we harvest, we only hand-pick lebanese cucumbers if they are firm and full-bodied (no signs of withering or shriveling, and no dark spots). We pay particular attention to the tips - our experience is that these areas are the first to indicate the cucumber is overly mature, meaning they will have a bitter and sour taste. We also examine the cucumber's colour: the lebanese cucumber must be a light white colour, with a slight tinge of green.

Where do we source our lebanese cucumber from?

Most of our lebanese cucumbers come direct from our farm - planted, cultivated and hand-picked by Sam and the team. Lebanese cucumbers plants start bearing about 8-10 weeks after sowing; be sure to check the Our Farm page to find out what stage our crops are at. Lebanese cucumbers usually grow well in our nutrient rich and well-draining soil, however when conditions aren't favourable to growing cucumbers on our farm (due to seasonality, crop rotation etc), we source lebanese cucumbers from growers in areas with similar climatic conditions, such as Werribee or the Sunraysia district.

What is the best way to keep lebanese cucumbers?

Lebanese cucumbers are best stored in the fridge - keep them in a plastic bag so that they keep their moisture. If you store the cucumber after use, cling wrap the open end, and make sure that you use it within a couple of days. Cucumbers are sensitive to chilling injury - this occurs when the cucumber is stored in very cold conditions. Signs that this is occurring are water-soaked areas, pitting, and accelerated decay.

Lebanese cucumber nutritional information

Lebanese cucumbers are very low in kilojoules and contain some vitamin C, vitamin A and B6. Nutritionally, their value is in their trace elements: sodium, potassium, folacin, traces of calcium, niacin, iron, zinc, manganese, silicon and sulfur. Cucumber has been found to be an effective tonic for the skin - regular use (the 'slices on your eyes' technique) can help to prevent pimples, wrinkles and skin dryness.

Serving tips and suggestions

The old saying 'cool as a cucumber' actually has some truth to it - the high water content of the cucumber means that the centre of the cucumber can be up to 6 degrees cooler than the surrounding air. On a hot day, this makes cucumbers a great refresher!
